Renowned Orthopedic Clinic Introduces New Name of Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center and Adds Phoenix Suns Physicians
Name replaces former Hedley Orthopaedic Institute; Phoenix Suns physicians Thomas Carter and C. Dain Allred expand access to orthopedic and sports medicine care throughout the Valley.
PHOENIX (Sept. 20, 2018) – Steward Medical Group today introduced a new name for its prestigious orthopedic clinic that is the official partner of the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury: Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center. The clinic, formerly known as Hedley Orthopaedic Institute, has also brought on prominent sports medicine physicians Thomas Carter, MD, and C. Dain Allred, MD, who will provide enhanced access for patients to world-class care.
“Though our name is changing, our reputation for offering top notch orthopedic care for star professional athletes and weekend warriors alike remains the same,” said Sanjay Shetty, president of Steward Medical Group. “This is an exciting change for our expert orthopedic and sports medicine providers. We are excited to present a new identity to our patients and the community, while at the same time reinforcing the commitment to our legacy of clinical expertise and an excellent patient experience.”
The name Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center aligns the orthopedic team with Steward Health Care and its hospitals in Mesa, Phoenix, and Tempe, as well as better reflects the expanded expertise of the group by adding the Sports Medicine specialty to the brand. The Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center has three offices in Phoenix, one in Mesa, and one in Tempe, for patient convenience. Fourteen physicians and six advanced practitioners provide comprehensive orthopedic care. In the past year, the Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center provided care to more than 10,000 patients. The addition of Drs. Carter and Allred enhances patient access and provides additional expert resources to care for them.

He also currently serves as Orthopedic Team Physician for Grand Canyon University. Dr. Carter is considered a world authority in the treatment of meniscus replacement in the knees, as well as articular cartilage, and holds several patents for treating these medical issues.
“I am excited to join Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center and look forward to taking care of our community’s residents and neighbors,” said Dr. Carter. “As an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, it is my goal to enable patients to live their highest quality of life and provide excellent care to help keep them well.”
Dr. Allred is an orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon with extensive experience in arthroscopy and surgery of the shoulder, knee, and ankle. Dr. Allred has held many different international and national teaching roles as faculty, lecturer, moderator and instructor to orthopedic peers. He currently serves as a Team Physician for the Phoenix Suns and Mesa City School District.
“The opportunity to care for patients at the Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center is one I feel privileged to have,” said Dr. Allred. “We have the most state-of-the-art diagnostics and resources available for our patients and I am excited to care for them and get them back at the top of their game.”
